Free Online Portuguese Courses

For learning the pronunciation and grammar of European Portuguese, please see the free course available on this site.  For other free online courses in Portuguese, please refer to the following links.  If you come across a genuinely free Portuguese language course with no strings attached, please let me know so I can add a link to it from here.

  • Idiot's Guide to Learning Portuguese - the free pronunciation and grammar course on this site.
  • De Tudo um Pouco - a gaudy site which uses frames, but the content is excellent and quite comprehensive. Lots of very useful audio (clearly spoken, but in a European Portuguese accent - almost a contradiction!), and no adverts.  Unfortunately, this site seems to have disappeared off the face of the internet. :o(
  • BBC Talk Portuguese - an introduction to basic vocabulary for tourists, covering a mixture of Brazilian and European usage.
  • Foreign Services Institute - a US-government language course (now in the public domain, and published by Glen D Fellows) for Brazilian Portuguese, including notes about European differences.  Consists of a total of 48 units in 2 volumes - typewritten and available as PDF downloads.  Accompanying audio files (mp3) are also available for download.
  • Easy Portuguese - a collection of lessons in Brazilian Portuguese. Audio files available. Lots of adverts though!
  • Tá Falado - also Brazilian I'm afraid, but with the specific slant of teaching English-speakers who are already familiar with Spanish. Lessons are delivered as podcasts, with PDF transcripts.

A most excellent site for Idiots like me. The concept, structure and execution of these lessons seems highly effective. A tremendous amount of work has obviously gone in to this, especial to say that it has all been done without financial reward. I would like to thank you for what you have done and the pleasure you have given me in my first attempts at Portuguese. I would regard this website as a primary resource for anyone interested in the Portuguese language.

Thanks for the resources you're offering on European Portuguese. I have roots there so I'd love to learn the language, but everywhere I go I come up with Brazilian Portuguese. It's nice to see that it still exists! Thanks again.
Another Thank you

I bumped into your site, and now have spent nearly 2 hours and enjoying the useful approach (to me). It is very effective, and I realize there is much more content for me to browse.
Was wondering if you have a downloadable version of all the pages with the inter-links, in html or even pdf format, to download once and be able to read at more leisure.
Believe me, it has helped me more; with many lessons behind me, a lot lot of 'mysteries' have been unravelled, mainly beacuse of the simple approach and especially the use of english to clarify and draw comparisons, which I was lacking.
Thanks.

My native portuguese friend and I were quite impressed with this website! Very helpful! My only suggestion would be more audio!
I knew nothing before this.

Ive had quite a bit of trouble finding a program that will teach me traditional portuguese. I am going to portugal this coming winter to meet my grandparents. I was told that if i spoke brazillian portuguese they might not understand me and or it might insult them can you recommend a product if there is one?

Portuguese people in Portugal understand Brazilian Portuguese perfectly well, and will not be offended if you use it - they will just be happy you have bothered to learn the language at all. There are some differences in etiquette, but unless you have a strong European Portuguese accent, nobody will take offense if you use a Brazilian expression.

Although I am Portuguese and fluent in it, my grand-daughter knows no Portuguese. She has now shown great interest. I can teach her and give her speaking lessons but I looked through the internet for some assistance in structuring a lesson. I found yours absolutely great. Well, well done.
Obrigada!

I am married to a man that was born in Algarve, Portugal and we have 3 kids. I have been wanting to learn for a while now and I would like my kids to know it but I ALWAYS had a hard time finding a resource to Learn Portuguese from Portugal. I want to thank you because you have made it easy for someone like me to pick it up. I have a goal that by this time next year I will speak it fluently, do you have any tips or advice?? Thank you so much again

I would like to thank you for being so generous with your knowledge and resources. I have recently started learning Portuguese (as in just now) and your site is like a treasure trove of learning materials. I am embarrassed to admit but the main reason why I became so interested in learning Portuguese was in order to understand the lyrics as well as the interviews and shows of Ana Carolina. Thank you once more for your generosity!
Great Site; De Tudo um Pouco Link Not Wo

Refreshing to see something on European Portuguese as it is definitely the poor relation where access to teaching materials and native speakers is concerned!

Can anyone else get the "De Tudo um Pouco" link to work, by the way?

That site changed addresses a few times, but now seems to have disappeared completely. I will keep my eye out for it in case it comes back somewhere. It's a shame, as it was the only free online course I could find in European Portuguese (apart from this site, which is not quite the same).
European Portuguese Resources
Written by David on 2010-08-05 00:07:12 IP: 92.10.169.2
I was interested to hear that Robert (a couple of posts above) thinks that European Portuguese is the poor relation when it comes to the availability of teaching materials. Perhaps this is true, but if you look around lots of useful resources at various levels can be found. Here are just a few.

1. At about the same level as BBC Talk Portuguese is the EC funded EUROMOBIL course:

http://www.solki.jyu.fi/english/publications/Euromobil/PT.htm

Although it is free you need to request a password before you can download the material to your PC. The content is based on short videos and Flash animations.

2. Another EC funded project is called "Oneness City" and the Portuguese element is here:

http://www.oneness.vu.lt/pt/

There is nothing to download, but the mixture of Flash, Shockwave and JavaScript might give your browser a headache (I found Internet Explorer worked rather better than Firefox).

3. If you have a basic grasp of Portuguese you can sample the teaching material made available by the Instituto Camões:

http://cvc.instituto-camoes.pt/aprender-portugues.html

4. With an intermediate knowledge of Portuguese then RTP (Rádio e Televisão de Portugal) has lots of interesting programmes including some concerned with the Portuguese language itself, including:

Bom Português (1 minute language quizes):
http://ww1.rtp.pt/multimedia/progVideo.php?tvprog=22815

Cuidado Com a Língua! ajuda a descobrir um mundo de palavras e expressões e a apaixonar-se pela língua portuguesa:
http://ww1.rtp.pt/blogs/programas/cuidado-com-a-lingua/

Falamos Português (part travelogue, part soap, part grammar lesson):
http://tv.rtp.pt/multimedia/progVideo.php?tvprog=21516

Unfortunately that page only gives access to the last few programmes in the "Falamos Português" series. Broadcast in 2006/7, a total of 25 programmes were made in a cooperative effort between RTP Internacional and the Universidade Aberta. The original portal to the series is here:

http://www.univ-ab.pt/falamos/index.html

However, if you click on the "Programas" link you'll find a list of links to the videos which are all broken as far as I can tell (although I suspect they are still archived somewhere on the RTP site). All is not lost though; the same page has links to the entire set of 25 programme transcripts in PDF.

I think I've broken the "keep your comment SHORT rule" but I hope this list is useful.
