Madeira

Cabo Girão - View from the top
View from the top of Cabo Girão
The beautiful island of Madeira provides a fascinating array of breathtaking landscapes, from its verdant mountainous interior to the spectacular cliff faces of its rocky shorelines - including what is claimed to be the 2nd highest cliff-face in the world at Cabo Girão.  The island enjoys a warm climate which facilitates its two main exports: bananas, and wine.  Everywhere you look on this island, you see banana trees!

The capital of Madeira is Funchal - a thriving town of interesting architecture, traditionally Portuguese cobbled pavements, and lots of cafés and bars.  Also well worth a visit is the town of Porto Moniz, where you will find geothermally heated swimming pools, adjacent to a majestic rocky coast.  Travelling inland, you can experience the fantastic vista at Encumeada - the only place on the island where you can see both the northern and southern coasts.  Local delicacies include honey cake ('bolo de mel'), and of course the fortified wine that bears the island's name.

Visitors to this volcanic island cannot fail to be impressed with its colourful scenery.  Even the wild flowers and plants are spectacular, with various cacti and 'bird of paradise' plants thriving here.  Despite the impressive beauty of the environment though, many young Madeirans seem to be keen to get off the island - it is seen by some as a great place to visit, but a boring place to live.

In my own experience though, this is perhaps the 2nd most beautiful place I have ever visited (first place goes to the Italian island of Capri, off the Sorrento peninsula).  An outstanding holiday destination, and a great chance to practise your Portuguese!

Porto Moniz
Porto Moniz

In addition to the main island of Madeira, there is a small population on the tiny island of Porto Santo - worth a visit if you like beaches, as this is the only place you will find a decent quantity of sand.  There are also a few scattered islands that are uninhabited, but still form part of the archipelago.

Great picture (Porto Moniz). Madeira would be a gorgeous place to go to. And soccer star C. Ronaldo was born in Madeira as well.

8) Madeira is beautiful. I have seen most of the Island's attractions and love going back to meet the friends i've made along the way. The view at Cabo Girão is amazing, But is NOT the 2nd highest cliff-face in the world as is often claimed. It isn't even the 2nd highest in Europe judging by the short list at wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff)
Beutiful Madeira

I just came back from this gorgeous island ... I have travelled many places in the world but few compare to this idyllic setting. Though there were a few cloudy days the overall temperature was lovely. The most wonderful experience was my trip on the Santa Maria do Colombo ... fantastic crew ... incredible dolphins sightings and getting to go full sail in the wind for the trip back to port... and incredibly reasonable! A must do.

Just spent a few weks in Madeira - amazing place, and a great walking destination. Went on the "Savage" big game boat for a few days had a brilliant trip, excellent crew, great service and caught 2 huge Blue Marlin, and the kids saw loads of Dolphins and they stayed out longer for us to swim. Madeira is the best place I've ever been to!

Beautiful place!!

I used to live there!! For 7 years!! Its a beautuiful place, especially for retirement - but if you are thinking about a carreer on the island . . . well just stop stressing your brain right now!! There are very few jobs on the island - and those that are available to us foreigners are extremely over-competitive!! So my advice to you is: save your well earned cash, wait a few years, then move to that extraordinarily cultural island of Madeira. Buy a nice villa with relaxing views of the ocean and surrounding mountains.
Lovely

Maderia is a laid back counrty and slow. For working it's not realy good but a wonderful place to visit - I go and visit my family every couple of months, love going there.

I would love to visit Madeira very soon it has such an amazing variety of stunning flowers and views. 8)
I won't be so home sick on this Island. I'm from the West Coast of Scotland (some 20 miles west of Glasgow in the port town of Greenock).
Madeira seems a very tranquil place to relax and enjoy.
Being a single mother of two young kids I love nothing more than my peace and quiet perhaps when their Dad next takes them for a holiday, I will visit Madeira with a friend to recuperate :L

I visited Madeira 60 years ago. It was most beautiful then and I was fortunate to have family friends who lived there. Alas, time takes its toll and I shan't visit again.
You who are young, do not miss the opportunity to visit Madeira

Madeira is the most beautiful place I have ever been to. Having travelled to a wide range of holiday destinations, Madeira has always been my favourite. The scenery is breathtaking and there is so much to do on the island. I have been visiting every year for the past 10 years now, sometimes visiting up to 4 times per year. I am now beginning to learn Portuguese and looking into visiting for 3 months during Summer. I would recommend a visit to Madeira to anyone :)
